This just might be one of my favorite personal growth topics because, as unattractive as consistency might sound, it’s one of the most profound traits of people who make the widest and deepest impact. We become what we want to be by consistently being what we want to become each day.
When we let consistency be a superpower in our lives, we intentionally position our attitude toward daily disciplines with a spirit of “get to” because we’re choosing to focus on the “gain of our new growth.” This trains our minds to give power to what propels us forward, not to what draws us into discouragement, limiting thoughts, or negative outcomes.
Here are a few treasured nuggets to remember as we develop new patterns…
Consistency compounds. Start very simple and do it daily. Motivation gets you going; discipline keeps you growing.
Focus on what matters. People who develop healthy momentum have a habit of thinking positively. They actively train their minds to focus on thoughts that produce and attract positive outcomes.
Everything worthwhile is uphill. As much as we want new patterns in our lives to be quick and easy, it doesn’t work that way. Good habits take a reasonable amount of time to develop, which comes with staying focused and repeatedly doing what matters most to us daily.
Start simple. It’s best to start with a single habit to build strong disciplines until you can do it without thinking. Then, you move to the next habit to aspire to add to your lifestyle. Studies show that the likelihood of retaining this new habit for a year or more is around 80% when we focus on changing a single behavior at a time. When we try to change two or more behaviors simultaneously, success rates drop as low as 20%.
Log your wins! When we track progress, we see progress, and it’s motivating. It can be challenging to stay motivated and focused; discouragement and distraction are the enemies of a focused life. We tackle this by intentionally visualizing our daily wins, the “what went right” stuff we get to build upon, giving power to what propels us forward.
The bottom line is that when consistency is our superpower, we authentically experience our personal best. This knowing produces an inward confidence that inspires self-respect, fulfillment, and gratitude.
Intentionally Own It: What growth do I get to move toward? What makes this matter to me? What brings me toward this growth? How can I count on myself to consistently move in this direction? When I do, what’s the gain of this growth?
