Have you ever really thought about the way a magnet works? Have you ever met a person who seems to attract people the way a magnet attracts metal? How do they do that? They believe in others and their belief helps people to begin to believe in themselves.
Believe. The first way to help other people believe in themselves is to actually believe in them. When people sense that we believe in their potential and desire to be successful, it literally draws them in. When you believe in them to start with, and communicate that belief, you become a magnet that sets them up to find that belief in themselves.
Mentor. Invite people into your life to walk alongside you. As you spend time together, help them enjoy the excitement of little victories and to experience successes. This helps them enjoy the feeling of victory, which gives them an idea of what they are aiming for.
Equip. Suggest areas where they can grow, books they can read, and other resources that can help them. Empower them by stepping back and letting them do the tasks themselves.
Victory. Nothing, nothing, nothing helps a person's belief in self like success. We can give good how-to advice and affirmation all day long, but it wouldn’t nearly have the impact that a single victory would have on that self-belief. When people achieve a victory, they are the ones who made that happen.
I hope you’re inspired to help set people up for success by choosing to be a belief magnet to those you influence – in all walks of your leadership, including your leadership at home. Choosing this attitude toward people shows them what they’re capable of on their own, increasing their self belief. This is the ultimate transfer of leadership.
The bottom line in leadership isn’t how far we advance ourselves but how far we advance others.
