Some of the most extraordinarily effective people I've met can find purpose and satisfaction in their work through good times and bad. They speak passionately about what they do, and their eyes light up as they talk.
Our words have a profound impact on our lives. According to Proverbs 18:21, “Life and death are in the power of the tongue.” Language that’s infused with hope, patience, and humor will have a positive effect on how we go about our day. On the other hand, defeatist words drag us down to their level and drain us of the joy we could find in our lives and work.
We shape our whole world by the words we speak and think! This isn't about the power of positive thinking or putting on a fake smile. It's about gaining self-awareness and self-control to use language that reflects who you are!
To integrate affirming, life-giving language into your life and work, be encouraged to:
- Stay prayerful. Prayer changes things—especially the person praying!
- Bring your A-game. We are mere stewards of the gifts, talents, and resources God has generously given to us. They aren’t ours to waste or hide away. Keep this in mind as you choose the words you speak to others (and to yourself!) about the work God has given you to do.
- Don't let temporary emotions have the final say. Remember, feelings fluctuate. It's only natural to sometimes feel fed up or frustrated. But that's what they are: feelings. Feelings and emotions change, but we may say things we later regret and can’t take back.
Ultimately, we choose our attitudes. These attitudes impact the quality of our work, how we affect those around us, and the joy we can find in our daily lives. So allow your attitude—and, as a natural extension, your language—to become one of the most vital assets that energize you to your core!
Intentionally Own It: My mom has always told us, “When it reaches your heart, it reaches your life.” Knowing this, how will you let this message reach you to ensure your life is positively shaped and led by the integrity of your heart?
